The Trip To Yellowstone National Park

Here are a few pictures from out trip out to Wyoming.

We left on Thursday night after John got home from work.  Here are the babies all snuggled in for a ride through the night.

I made them special car seat pillows to help them sleep in the car better.  Donny hated his for sleeping and only used it to hit his sister with.

Carlie loved hers and wanted it left on her seat belt most of the way to Yellowstone.

By morning we had made it to Texas.

You can see the pillow better in this picture.

We stopped by Aunt Mildred's house for an evening visit and has a wonderful time.  Carlie especially enjoyed going out to the lake with Aunt Mildred to feed the ducks.  And I enjoyed catching up with Aunt Mildred and hearing all her recent discoveries on McFarland genealogies and a few of West Brooklin's best kept secrets.

John had a much needed nap and got up to have a little supper before we got back on the road. Donny was hoping for some extra pizza. He never seems to really think he is full.

Through the night we rode through Texas and in the morning we arrived in New Mexico.

We finally saw mountains after two days of flat empty fields.

 Breakfast in New Mexico.

Most of these pictures where taken from the car and are far from perfect, but we had too far to go to stop for pictures as often as we wanted.

 Napping.
The babies were such good travelers and amazed us everyday at how well they did on the road hour after hour.

When we reach the hotel in Colorado springs it was early afternoon.  Carlie climbed into bed first thing.

 Freshening up.

We didn't have time to get into the pool but John took the babies out to put their toes in the water for a minute.  We went out that evening and met Aunt Peggy for supper.  I wish so much we got pictures of us together. But I didn't, I guess I was too tried by that point and forgot about taking pictures.  But we had a wonderful visit and it was so nice to see her again.

Breakfast as the hotel before we left Colorado.  Carlie had to have all her breakfast finished to earn this donut.  It was hard but she was so happy to go pick it out when her plate was finally empty.

This was outside the hotel before we left.

Trying the different flavors of rocks.

 At the Wyoming, Colorado border.

Colorado, I had never seen such endless expanses of fields.

Beautiful and peaceful in a lonely kind of way.  And standing out there in all that emptiness, it was so quiet.  It reminded me of the dead silence of a snowy night in Maine, the same way it made your ears almost ring with want of something to hear.

Then into the most stunning mountains I have ever seen in my life.

These pictures don't even come close to doing justice to the enormity of these mountains.  They are truly breathtaking.

 A special drink.

 Tunnels through the mountains.

A stop to stretch our legs.

After three long days and nights on the road we finally saw a sign for Yellowstone. You can't imagine how welcome that sign was.  We had been talking to Carlie about going to Yellowstone for weeks and she was so excited. The night we left she was so happy to get into the car to "go to Yellowstone." But through the long trip we kept telling her we were going to Yellowstone when we put her in the car and she would ask where we were going. But after all the stops and three days of telling her we were going to Yellowstone we were afraid she would give up on us and start doubting that we would ever get there.  She never did. We started laughing every time we told her we were going to Yellowstone because we had said it so often it sounded a little unbelievable to us. But the last night, after supper she stayed awake hours after Donny had fallen sleep and was singing in the back seat and talking about going camping and exclaiming about all the "big mountain." Then about a half hour before we arrived at our campsite she fell sleep.

We had a little supper before the last two hours from Cody, Wyoming, into Yellowstone. After supper was over it was dark and we couldn't see any of the view that night.  But even in the dark we could see the steam of the hot springs rising from the woods and at the edge of the road in some places. It was such a strange, eerie sight in the middle of the night.
